When and How to Use Screen Filters Effectively

The best way to deploy a screen filter depends heavily on your water source:

Surface Water (Rivers, Lakes, Canals, Ponds): Surface water often contains significant organic matter (like algae) and physical debris. Here, screen filters usually serve as secondary filters. They are installed after a primary filter (like a media filter, which is better at removing organic loads). In this setup, the screen filter acts as a safety net, catching any particles the primary filter might miss or any filtration media that might wash out.

Well Water: Groundwater quality varies.

If the well water has a low sediment load, a screen filter might be sufficient as the primary filter.

If the well water carries a significant amount of sand or silt, a screen filter is often used as a secondary filter after a hydrocyclone or vortex sand separator (which efficiently removes heavier mineral particles).


Exploring Different Types of Screen Filters

Gravity Screen Filters: Ideal for systems where water flows from an elevated source (like a tank or reservoir) and minimizing pressure loss is critical. These filters operate effectively under low-pressure conditions.


Intake Screens: When pumping directly from an open water source (lake, river, pond), an intake screen is crucial. Positioned at the pump's suction inlet, its job is to prevent larger debris, fish, plants, and animals from entering the system in the first place. Good design ensures water can pass through while deflecting debris, often using horizontal screens below the surface or basket-type filters.

Self-Cleaning Screen Filters: For maximum convenience and consistent performance, consider automatic self-cleaning screen filters. These units monitor the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet. As the screen accumulates debris, the pressure drop increases. Once it reaches a preset threshold, an automatic flushing cycle is triggered, cleaning the screen without interrupting irrigation significantly. Cleaning can often be scheduled on a timer basis as well.


Disc Filters

It's worth noting that disk filters represent a newer technology that can sometimes be used instead of or alongside screen filters. They use stacks of grooved discs to trap particles and offer excellent filtration capacity, particularly for certain types of contaminants.
