For a seawater desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, frequent reverse osmosis (RO) membrane cleaning was disrupting operations. The existing pretreatment equipment could not adequately retain sediment, suspended matter, and marine organisms from the incoming seawater. The RO membranes required cleaning every 15 days.

YuanLv Filter supplied a 4# D24 multi-bag filter housing with 20 μm polyester filter bags and a 316L stainless steel housing to improve particle removal before the RO stage.

After installation, the reported membrane cleaning interval increased from 15 to 60 days, while desalination system production efficiency improved by 12%.

Project Overview

Location: Saudi Arabia

Application: Seawater desalination pretreatment

Equipment: 4# D24 multi-bag filter housing

Filter media: 20 μm polyester filter bags

Housing material: 316L stainless steel

Supplier: YuanLv Filter

How a D24 Bag Filter Improved Seawater Desalination Pretreatment

The Challenge: Particles Reaching the RO System

Raw seawater contains suspended particles and biological matter that can contribute to fouling in downstream membrane systems. At this plant, the existing pretreatment arrangement was not providing sufficient particle retention.

The result was a short cleaning cycle of just 15 days. Frequent membrane cleaning added to maintenance demands, while membrane replacement represented a significant operating expense.

The plant needed an additional filtration stage to retain suspended impurities before the water reached the RO system.

Why YuanLv Filter Supplied a D24 Multi-Bag Housing

YuanLv Filter selected a 4# D24 multi-bag filter housing fitted with 20 μm polyester filter bags.

The configuration combined three important elements:

• Multi-bag arrangement: The D24 configuration accommodates multiple filter bags within one housing, providing a practical arrangement for industrial liquid filtration.

• 20 μm polyester media: The selected filter bags were used to capture suspended impurities in the seawater pretreatment stream.

• 316L stainless steel housing: This material was selected for the corrosive seawater service environment.

The equipment was intended to improve solids retention ahead of the RO membranes. It served as a pretreatment filtration stage rather than a replacement for the membrane system or the plant's other treatment processes.

Results After Installation

Following installation, the plant reported three measurable changes:

Performance IndicatorBefore InstallationAfter Installation
RO membrane cleaning intervalEvery 15 daysEvery 60 days
Desalination system production efficiencyBaselineIncreased by 12%
Annual membrane replacement costOriginal operating costReduced by approximately RMB 200,000 per year

The longer cleaning interval reduced membrane maintenance frequency. The reported improvement in production efficiency and lower membrane replacement costs also helped reduce the operating burden associated with the previous pretreatment arrangement.

These figures reflect the results reported for this project; performance at other plants will depend on feedwater conditions, pretreatment design and operating practices.

A Bag Filter Application for Seawater Pretreatment

This project illustrates how filter media, housing configuration and material selection need to be considered together when specifying a bag filter for seawater service.

For desalination operators experiencing frequent downstream membrane fouling, the appropriate filtration stage depends on the incoming solids load, required particle retention, operating conditions and compatibility of wetted materials.

YuanLv Filter supplies industrial bag filter housings and customized filtration equipment for different process requirements. To discuss a similar application, provide your feedwater conditions, target filtration rating, required flow rate and operating pressure when requesting a quotation.
